Maher & Grosh was one of the most respected names in American cutlery during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Based in Toledo, Ohio, the company sold a wide variety of high-quality pocket knives through catalogs and hardware dealers across the United States. Jack London, among many other well known Americans, was a customer of Maher & Grosh. Like many wholesale knife firms of this era, Maher & Grosh contracted production to well-known manufacturers, like Miller Brothers, New York Knife Co and Schrade. Maher & Grosh Pocket knives with screws in the handle were made by Miller Brothers Cutler out or Meriden, Connecticut.

Maher & Grosh knives featured ornate blade etchings which unfortunately disappeared over time on these knives with use and age. However, original advertisements show the blades featuring catchy phrases such as “Razor Steel” and “$2 knife” while knives feature names like “Indian Hunter“, the “Dakota Devil” or the “Yankee Whittler.” A true prize turns up every now and then when a 100+ year old Maher & Grosh knife with a blade etch that is still visible. These knives are very desirable and are highly sought after by collectors.
