Russell & Co. traces its roots back to 1834 in Greenfield, Massachusetts, when John Russell began producing durable knives that quickly earned a reputation for reliability across New England and beyond. Eventually, the company became well known for the iconic Russell Barlow, a classic knife featuring the long, single bolster stamped with an “R” pierced by an arrow. These simple knives became popular for their simple design, sturdy construction, and everyday usefulness. Their rustic saw cut bone handles eventually gave way to smooth bone after years of pocket wear.
In addition to the Barlow, J. Russell & Co. produced a wide range of traditional pocket knives, including jack knives, pen knives, and utility patterns.
