The New York Knife Co originally began in Matteawan, NY (became the town of Beacon) in 1852.  This factory was formed by 16 employees of the Waterville Cutlery Co who wanted to start their own outfit.  Knives bearing this early period that bear this stamp are very rare and sought after by collectors today.  In 1856, the New York Knife Co moved to Walden along the Wallkill River where they would stay until their closing in 1931.   New York Knife Co Knives added the Hammer Brand logo in the late 1870’s and these knives were very popular and well made. The factory, originally a cloth mill, was expanded in the 1870’s and again in the 1880’s in order to accommodate increased production.  Check out this detailed report from an archaeological dig done at the factory site in Walden, NY.  Check out the Schrade knives page and Case knives page as well.
