Al Mar knives was founded in 1979. The company was headquartered in Tualatin, Oregon while the knives were made in the famous cutlery city of Seki, Japan. Al Mar, the son of Chinese immigrants, served in the Special Forces Reserve Unit in Vietnam in the 1950s. As a result, the knives that he designed were mostly for police and military. Before starting his own company, Al Mar made a name for himself in the knife industry as the head of knife design at Gerber Legendary Blades.
